Golf Story

Right then...

Golf Story. Golf. Story. Those words don't often go together. Now consider this. Its an RPG. a golf RPG. It's an interesting concept, to say the least.

Developed by Sidebar Games for the Nintendo switch, it follows the tail of a young man following his dreams of playing golf.

The tutorial is the main guy as a child, playing a round of golf with his dad, teaching you the basics (and game controls). You are then shot forward a few years, as the main guy wants to take up golf again, but with his dad nowhere in sight...

The game is very reminiscent to the RPGs of old; with 8 bit style graphics, quests and an inventory. But the difference is instead of equipping swords, you unsheathe golf clubs. This leads to an interesting mix of mechanics, with a feel of play very similar to the old tiger woods golf games. You can tee up anywhere you like; opting to hit people, building or even the odd fairway!

There are challenges which are very different to those you would find on a normal course, which makes for some interesting play and some genuinely funny comments by some of the NPCs.

It does suffer the same as a lot of similar RPGs though. It occasionly doesn't direct you to where you need to go next, so there are times where you are going round talking to everyone you can find until a new quest is started. It may also not appeal to those who don't like golf, but I would most certainly suggest people who enjoy RPGs to have a go, and think of the golf aspect as a puzzle, rather than a dedicated golf simulator!

Pros:

  • A light hearted RPG with an interesting twist
  • Surprisingly addictive
  • Itches the 8-bit RPG need

Cons:

  • Golf is not for everyone
  • Can be slow in parts
  • Not much replayability
